Description: All children need to be included in decision making that affects their lives (Franklin and Sloper 2009). For children with communication difficulties; however, this avenue of engagement in goal setting can be compromised. This chapter provides guidance and strategies for engaging children with communication difficulties more effectively in meaningful goal setting. The application of Talking Mats® (Murphy, Cameron and Boa 2013) is introduced as an example of how tools and strategies may be applied to support effective goal setting for a child with communication difficulties.
